DAY #4: JEFF
Weather was really cold today. We woke up covered in snow, as well as our shelter. This plus fasting today until Thursday at 12PM for 24 hrs really took a toll on me. I was pretty tired today because of waking up on and off last night, as well as not eating anything today. It was difficult to concentrate in class, and i constantly felt myself dosing off or looking out the window to see if the snowing stopped. On a regular day, seeing snowfall wouldn’t really upset me, but today it did because I knew our shelter is piling up with snow as well as my belongings outside.
A student came up to us, and started thanking us for doing this campaign because her brother suffered from depression, left home and lived in a youth shelter that is similar to ones we are supporting. She was not able to finish her story and started to cry…. Everything happened so fast I didn’t know what to do except for giving her a hug. This experience made me really emotional and helped me forget about the coldness of the weather. Reactions like this, really shows that this campaign is working and creating awareness, getting students to start thinking about homelessness as a whole and that was the goal from the start.
As for family and friends concerned about my well being tonight. We are constantly monitoring the weather and if the temperature gets below -15 or below -27 with wind chill, the participants will be moved inside and will sleep in the 24hr lounge. Don’t worry, I know how to take care of myself and will not do anything that will jeopardize my health
Tomorrow is the last night… where has this week gone!!! I know I’ve been saying this every blog but thank you thank you thank you to everyone who has supported me and the 5 Days campaign!! You are all amazing, and the thought of your support is what keeps me going at night! Thanks again!
