Dalhousie Day 1 Recap – Kenny

After spending my first night outside for this year’s 5 Days for the Homeless campaign, I can definitely say that it has already been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences that I have been through in my life. Last night before going to sleep, the team had fun talking about the week and preparing for the cold night ahead. I didn’t have a problem falling asleep, but after 2:00 a.m. my feet were cold and I was in and out of sleep for the remainder of the night. Once the morning came, I felt a sense of accomplishment for making it through night one in -17C weather. I also really began to think about how unfortunate it is that people have to sleep outside in conditions like this on a regular basis. Often people that are experiencing homelessness have nowhere else to go, not to mention they generally don’t have sleeping bags like the ones that we will be using this week. As day two began this morning, everyone in the Dalhousie community was very supportive – constantly asking us if we needed anything, donating their spare change, and asking questions about Phoenix Youth Programs and the 5 Days campaign. As the week progresses, I’m hoping that my body will begin to adjust to the cold and I hopefully will be able to get more sleep tonight. Overall I am looking forward to the days to come and the challenge that lies ahead. – Kenny
